Release notes

Dabble updates itself, often more than once a week, so the version you’re writing in today may not be the one you opened last month. This page is the running record of what changed.

Every release since Dabble 3.0 went live on 13 July 2026 is here, newest first. If you’d rather have the tour of what 3.0 brought than the version-by-version detail, read What’s new in Dabble 3.0.

September 2026

3.0.74 — 10 September 2026

New & improved

• When Dabble can’t save to this device at all, the editor now stops and says so, instead of letting you keep writing into changes that have nowhere to go. The message counts the unsaved changes and offers to try again, export them as plain text straight from memory, reload, or contact support with the details attached. While Dabble’s servers are holding a copy of that work, an amber notice says so and you can keep writing.
• Work that can’t be saved on this device is now also sent to Dabble’s servers, so a copy exists even if this device’s storage never recovers. That copy appears in Held Changes alongside the local ones.
• Changes set aside in Held Changes are now saved through a separate storage connection, with a further fallback, so they survive even when the main connection has stopped responding. Copies are gathered back into Held Changes the next time Dabble starts.
• Returning to Dabble after it was in the background or your device was asleep now checks that local storage still responds and reconnects before you type. Safari in particular could leave the first words typed on return in a connection that had stopped.
• Leftover data from Dabble 2.5 is now cleared from this device automatically, once Dabble has confirmed everything in it reached 3.0 and a safety copy was uploaded. It could take up most of the space Dabble used on a device, and made a database too large to send to support.

Fixed

• Creating a scene, page, character, or folder from the left navigation now opens it, expanding any collapsed section on the way. It used to leave you on the document you already had open, so the new one looked like it hadn’t been created.
• Selecting the whole document and choosing Body Text clears a trailing empty heading again. Choosing any style from the text-style dropdown with the cursor inside a bold word no longer un-bolds the character under it.
• A regular expression search in Find & Replace can no longer freeze Dabble. A pattern that takes too long is stopped and reported as too complex, instead of leaving you with no way out but a reload. Replacing a match now waits for the search to catch up before moving to the next one.
• Pasting a plot line into a grid now fits it to that grid’s rows. A line copied from a taller grid kept its original height, which could corrupt the grid and, in the worst case, leave the project blank when it reloaded.
• A pinned note card whose note was deleted elsewhere, by a collaborator or another device, now says so and offers to recover it with what you’ve typed. Everything typed into that card used to be discarded without a word.
• Resizing a pinned note card by dragging its corner no longer creeps back toward its smallest size while you hold the pointer still.
• Move to Project now offers projects shared with you as a Co-Author, not just the ones you own, and marks those rows as shared. Whether a document can be moved into a project is decided from your role on that project. Two quick clicks no longer start the same move twice, which could leave two copies in the destination.
• Clicking Current Version in Version History now opens and closes Time Machine. Outside Time Machine it did nothing, even though that is the state the panel opens in.
• The notice saying changes are held safely on this device no longer stays up forever because of old entries. Held changes older than 30 days are cleared, and only entries holding actual text count as recoverable work.
• A background repair that would have replaced text it could not restore now sets that text aside in Held Changes instead of overwriting it.
• Dabble now recovers when it has to set aside a change it can’t apply, instead of getting stuck with the project no longer saving.
• A document deleted from another device now clears its local data on this one too, rather than leaving it behind.
• The delete button on a property row no longer overlaps long values, and sits neatly in the row’s corner.

3.0.73 — 7 September 2026

New & improved

• The Comment History panel can also be filtered by commenter, so you can work through one beta reader’s feedback at a time. The status and commenter menus count within each other, and both reset when you switch projects.
• The role menu in the Share window now says which roles need the invitee to have their own subscription. Only Co-Author does. Editor, Reviewer, and Reader work without one. Co-Authors under People with Access carry the same note.

Fixed

• The thesaurus no longer lists every suggestion twice after you double-click a word. Selecting a word again after editing its sentence, or after a lookup failed, now looks it up afresh.
• Each device in the sync status list now shows its full version number.

3.0.72 — 6 September 2026

Fixed

• The sprint timer now counts only the words you write. It was measuring the growth of the whole project, so documents finishing loading, text arriving from another device, and a co-author’s changes all counted toward your lap, and the total could keep climbing while you sat still. Pasted text still counts.
• Signing out now checks everything that could hold unsynced work before clearing Dabble’s data from this device, including changes waiting in Held Changes and anything typed in the last few seconds. It used to check only one place, so it could report nothing pending and then delete the only copy. Importing or deleting the database gets the same check.

• A colored property-list heading now always uses white text, instead of switching between black and white as you step through the palette.

Fixed

• Merging a review copy is sturdier. A brief connection drop during the merge’s final check no longer reports a finished merge as failed, the Merging… label no longer disappears early while a long merge is still running, a merge that failed can be tried again without reloading, and switching projects mid-merge no longer carries that merge’s bookkeeping into the other project.
• The counts in the comments pill are now consistent. A single count keeps its text label, and when unread comments or tracked changes join it, every count shows as an icon and a number.

• Property-list section headers now sit on a faint tint so they read apart from the card, and the section menu has a new Heading Color option. Pick a swatch to fill the header with that color, or choose Remove Color to clear it. The color follows your theme and the colorblind-friendly setting, as plot lines do.

• The Comment History panel can now be filtered by status: all comments, unread, open, resolved, or original content deleted. Each option shows a live count, and the header count follows the filter.

Fixed

• Merging a review copy that takes longer than a single request allows now waits for Dabble’s servers to finish and shows the progress, instead of telling you the merge is still running and asking you to reload. A merge that stopped part-way through now resumes on its own, and the Merge into Project button reads Merging… while another tab or device is still merging.
• After resolving a comment, the next and previous arrows in the comments navigator carry on from that comment, instead of jumping back to an earlier unresolved one. They now walk the whole book in order, including scenes that haven’t loaded yet.
• Choosing a style from the text-style dropdown, such as a heading or Body Text, with the cursor at the end of a line no longer clears the formatting of the line below. At the end of the document it also no longer adds a blank line.
• Pasting several paragraphs while suggesting changes with Track Changes no longer scrambles the first line and duplicates the rest of the paste at the end of the document.
• The sprint timer’s count-in plays three beeps and a chime again. It was playing all five beeps in the recording, with the last two landing after the sprint had started.
• Work that Dabble sets aside when it can’t save is no longer lost if your device’s storage happens to be reconnecting at that moment. Dabble now waits and tries again.
• Reviewers and readers can now open an image full screen, with zoom and download. Reviewers who can only comment no longer see image editing options their role doesn’t allow, since using one could leave the document unable to save. Book cover art no longer opens the viewer, and an untitled image downloads under its file name rather than a placeholder.
• The comments pill no longer shows the same number twice when every comment is unread.
• The Add Property button now sits centered in the gap between property cards.

3.0.67 — 2 September 2026

Fixed

• Reset to Default under Project Settings, Formatting now restores the default font. Choosing a font there also no longer leaks into your other work. Every project without its own saved formatting could quietly pick up that font for the rest of the session.
• A project that stopped saving after a version restore made by an older version of Dabble now repairs itself and carries on, instead of holding onto your queued writing.
• The editor no longer repaints co-author highlighting over and over when nothing has changed, which had it working away in the background with no typing going on.

New & improved

• Property lists now read as cards in every editor, and manuscripts and notebook pages get the same section controls that character notes have.
• Inserting a property list now places it on the line your cursor is on, as its own card.
• A section’s heading can be added or removed from its menu.
• Typing a property name now suggests the terms you haven’t used yet.
• Copying a property list and pasting it into another app now gives a real two-column table.

Fixed

• Tab from a section heading now moves into the rows below it.
• Rejecting a suggested property list no longer leaves a stray divider behind. It also reads as “Property list divider” in Track Changes, instead of an internal abbreviation.

3.0.65 — 1 September 2026

New & improved

• Character notes now use property lists. Start a section from a ready-made template or an empty one, add properties as you go, and each section reads as a card. Eight character sections are included, and a whole section can be removed in one step.
• Clicking an image now opens it full screen, with zoom, drag to pan, fit to screen, and a download button. Formatting moved to a chip at the top right of the picture, with align, resize and delete under its menu.
• Work that Dabble had to set aside now appears in Held Changes, where you can recover or discard it. It was being saved before this, but nothing showed it to you, so it looked like it had been lost.
• Invented character and place names are no longer flagged as misspellings. The names your project already uses are now sent along with each spelling and grammar check.
• Preferences has a new Send Database to Support option. It uploads a copy of your local database and opens a conversation with support, so there is no file for you to find and attach.
• Reconnecting after Dabble loses its connection now picks up where it left off, instead of re-syncing every document.
• The image width slider covers its whole range, and stops at 20% rather than shrinking an image to nothing.

Fixed

• Exports handle @mentions. They came out as [object Object] in HTML and Markdown, disappeared entirely in Google Docs, and stopped a Word export from finishing at all.
• Moving a document to another project now tells you where it ended up, and stops safely when there is nowhere to file it. A scene moved into a shared project could land somewhere unexpected with nothing to say where it had gone.
• A device that had fallen too far behind to catch up now reloads the project and recovers. Every attempt used to be refused, which stopped all content from syncing on that device.
• Printing and exporting now handle smaller headings, list markers and images correctly.
• Fixed pasted text arriving jumbled, most often on an iPad.
• The formatting bubble now waits until you finish selecting text, instead of appearing while you are still dragging.
• The comments pill no longer pushes out over the page in a narrow window or with the tools sidebar open.
• Collapsing the Scenes row under one plot grid no longer collapses it under every other grid linked to that book.
• Dragging a plot line in the left navigation no longer leaves the grid’s columns in the wrong order or the navigation drawn incorrectly.

August 2026

3.0.64 — 31 August 2026

Fixed

• A merge that stopped after part of your review copy had already been applied now says so, and tells you that merging again picks up where it left off. Leave the book alone until it finishes.
• A merge that is taking a while and is still running in the background now asks you to wait and reload to see whether it finished, instead of inviting you to start it over. Both of these used to report that nothing had happened.
• Exporting to Google Docs no longer fails on a document with nothing in it.

3.0.63 — 28 August 2026

Fixed

• Image size and alignment now save, and the image toolbar stays reachable after you click away.
• The mouse wheel scrolls the manuscript again when the pointer is over the text.
• Word exports now show the book’s author in the running head, instead of a placeholder.
• Merging and splitting scenes now carries tracked changes across, including changes that replaced one piece of text with another.
• Review copies no longer show a reader suggestions left over from the manuscript they were made from.
• Syncing a tracked change’s comment thread no longer clears the rest of what the thread holds, such as its replies.
• Opening a review copy for review no longer removes that copy’s tracked changes and comment threads.
• If your role on a shared project doesn’t arrive, Dabble now asks for it again instead of spending the whole session without it.
• Changes set aside after a failed save are now stored in a form that can’t fail for the same reason the save did.
• The menu on a template card stays open while you share the template.

• A template can now be previewed from its own link without an account, and the template you were looking at carries through to your new project after you sign up.

• A template link that can’t be opened now tells you so, instead of leaving you on a blank page.

• Word exports now carry your comments and tracked changes across, so an editor or beta reader can work with them outside Dabble.
• A book can now have more than one plot grid linked to it.

Fixed

• Beta Reader and Friend review copies no longer carry your unaccepted suggestions into the copy. Invited readers could see both the proposed insertions and the text marked for deletion.
• Merging two scenes now brings the second scene’s comments with it, instead of leaving them behind in the trash.
• A reviewer’s browser no longer removes comment threads belonging to other people.
• Exports keep your blank lines, and two lists that sit next to each other no longer run together.
• A title image now exports at full width.
• Scene breaks are more consistent across printing and exporting, and cover notes headings print correctly.
• Some translated text showed [TODO] placeholders instead of the translation. All of them are now translated.
• A writing goal is no longer marked won using the word counts from the project you were in before.
• Spelling and grammar no longer re-check the same paragraphs over and over.
• Trashed and archived books no longer appear in the plot grid’s book list.
• A plot grid moved to a different book now shows that book’s scenes, not the old one’s.
• Removing a book cover now clears its shape, so the next cover you add isn’t squeezed into the old one.
• Time Machine now shows older versions the way they were written. Some could come back with text missing.
• Dabble now recovers when its local storage stops responding, instead of waiting on it indefinitely.
• Reviewers no longer see a message about needing to be an owner or co-author for a repair they never asked for.

3.0.60 — 25 August 2026

New & improved

• Read to Me now works on mobile, downloads voices straight from its own menu, and plays continuously instead of pausing between paragraphs.
• Your daily writing goal now has checkboxes for what counts toward it: manuscript only, whether pasted text counts, and whether deletions count. Changing one updates today’s total and the last 30 days straight away, and goals you already had keep the numbers they had.
• Everywhere Dabble shows how much you’ve written today now agrees. The daily goal, project goals, the editor footer and the dashboard tile all count the same way.
• Goal cards on a shared project now say when the total includes words from all co-authors.
• Words you’ve added to your personal dictionary now work offline, and offline spelling refreshes itself when you reconnect.
• Dabble now tells you when spelling and grammar checking is unavailable, instead of retrying quietly.
• Version History now shows that it is working while it loads and while it prepares a version, instead of sitting blank for several seconds. The indicator stays correct when you move through versions quickly.
• Deleting a document now selects the one above it in the same book, instead of jumping you to the first book.
• Links that point back into Dabble now open in the app instead of reloading it.
• The left navigation now scrolls the current document into view when Dabble moves you somewhere else.
• The formatting toolbar now travels with the panel as it slides open and shut.
• The right sidebar remembers which tab you picked, and falls back to one that exists.
• iPads held in landscape now get the desktop layout.

Fixed

• The sprint timer keeps counting while its tab or pane is in the background.
• The daily goal card no longer counts ahead of itself as you type. Words in a scene were counted again for its chapter and book, then snapped back once the count saved.
• Clicking Version History with the right sidebar collapsed now opens the sidebar. It used to light the button and do nothing else.
• Numbered lists no longer show as bullets, and list markers no longer stack on top of each other.
• An image at the very start of a document keeps the width you set. Pasted and imported images could come back at full size, and that size was then saved over the one you chose.
• Dabble now says why the editor is read-only when your role on a shared project never arrived.
• A review copy you have just accepted is treated as a review copy right away. For a moment it offered owner-only options like renaming and trashing, and those changes were then refused without telling you.
• Editing across text written by someone else no longer strips who wrote it.
• Comments on tracked changes are no longer rewritten every few seconds as you type, and replies to them are no longer discarded.
• The Include Notes export option now says that comments and tracked changes are not part of the export.
• A tracked change can now be resolved when its comment thread has gone missing.
• Emptying the trash now works on projects shared with you.
• Submitting a new project twice no longer creates it twice.
• The banner that appears when Dabble can’t save now explains the cause, such as a full disk.
• A failed read at startup is now reported, instead of showing you an empty account.
• A failed image or attachment upload is no longer reported as a problem with your writing.
• Merging a project no longer leaves behind a tile that never finishes loading and can’t be dismissed.
• Canceling a voice download no longer deletes a voice another tab had already finished downloading.
• A project that stopped saving after a restore now either recovers on its own or says so, instead of failing quietly.
• Book covers that fail to load are no longer requested again on every dashboard update.

Fixed

• A dismissed spelling or grammar suggestion now stays dismissed when an edit further up the document shifts it.
• Dabble now waits for your role on a shared project to arrive from the server before deciding what you can do, instead of guessing while it loads.
• Only people who can manage members now see the controls for pending invitations.
• Fixed a shared project flipping between blocked and available after your access to it was removed.

• If you used the sprint timer before laps were tracked per project, Dabble now offers once to add that earlier session history to a project you choose. Dismissing the offer leaves the history alone.

• The sprint timer now counts the words you write, survives a refresh, and lets you end a lap early.
• Editing a writing goal no longer discards your decision about words written before you set it.
• Printing uses your manuscript’s fonts and formatting again.
• Closing the print window mid-print no longer causes an error.
• Importing from Word no longer switches on formatting the document had explicitly turned off.
• A collaborator is no longer treated as the project’s owner when their role hasn’t loaded yet.
• Collaborators no longer queue spelling and grammar data the server refuses.
• A change your role doesn’t allow no longer makes Dabble think you have lost access to the project.
• A change the server refuses is now set aside, instead of blocking that document from saving again.

• Collaborators no longer see buttons and menu items for structural changes (adding, moving or deleting documents) that their role doesn’t allow.

• Fixed content changed outside the editor (by a browser extension or grammar tool) corrupting the document.

• Pasted and imported text no longer turns indents into literal tab characters.
• Typing after scrolling away now jumps back to your cursor.

• The startup quote is readable again. Its full display time was restored.

• Resolved comment threads now collapse, long threads are no longer cut off, and the navigator moves freely.
• Beta Readers can no longer navigate to other readers’ comment threads.
• Fixed pasting when a co-author’s edit arrives at the same moment.
• The view scrolls back to your cursor after a cut or paste.
• Dabble-format export now matches the editor and no longer silently substitutes fonts.

• Match Case, Whole Word and Regex can now be combined in Find.

• The device-list refresh button no longer reads as a full data resync.

• Dabble now holds your place in a document, and restores it when you switch documents, click through the sidebar, or restart the app entirely.
• Move between scenes in the manuscript with the arrow keys.

• Fixed typewriter scrolling latching on after a key press that produced no text.
• A review-copy merge that succeeded is no longer reported as failed, and Dabble no longer asks you to retry a merge that can’t succeed.
• Drag and drop now works with a trackpad on iPadOS.
• Word export now defaults to US Letter, puts matching space above block quotes, and no longer emits a section property that some readers rejected.
• Typing a chapter range in Export now applies without also clicking its radio button.
• The manuscript title page is now translated.
• Today’s Target now locks in from real, synced word counts rather than a partial local count.
• Spell-check now runs in note cards, plot cards and book-outline scene cards, and re-checks when a co-author edits them.
• Creating from a folder’s menu now adds the new item inside that folder.
• Fixed note cards colliding between documents. Copying a document now gives its notes fresh IDs.
• The empty-cell plot-line tooltip now only appears in Colorblind Friendly mode.
• Keyboard shortcuts now follow your keyboard layout rather than physical key position.
• Dabble now surfaces broken browser storage instead of failing quietly.

• Adding a comment no longer scrolls the chapter away from you, and a comment you’re writing keeps its highlight when a co-author’s edit arrives.

• Major plot-grid repair work: ordinary edits no longer leave the grid needing repair, drags and reorders keep rows and children in step, and the repair pass no longer fights your edits or resurrects trashed scenes.
• Dabble now asks the browser for persistent storage, so your local work isn’t silently evicted.
• If your subscription is paused or past due, your work stays visible read-only, with a clear status chip.
• Export stays reachable in read-only mode, and is correctly hidden in template preview for lapsed accounts.

Dabble 3.0 general availability

Dabble 3.0 went live over three days. The builds that shipped in that window didn’t carry stable version numbers, so they’re collected here as one release. This is everything that landed.

• Dabble rewritten from the ground up, for better performance and to bring it onto current technology.
• Billing and account details moved out of the writing app, onto their own page in your Dabble account online.
• Real-time co-authoring. You and your collaborators write in the same project at the same time, with four roles to hand out: Co-Author, Editor, Reviewer, and Reader.
• Track changes. Turn tracking on and your edits become suggestions to accept or reject, with Original, Difference, and Suggestions views.
• Comments, rebuilt. Threaded conversations that survive edits, with read and unread state and a full Comment History.
• Review Copies. An isolated copy of your project for a friend, beta reader, or editor, merged back on your terms.
• Version History. Scrub back through the Time Machine to view any past state, restore the whole project, or bring a single document forward.
• Quick Open. A command palette that fuzzy-matches any document or note in your project.

• Documents that can’t be renamed now show their fixed name.
• Remote sign-out now reliably signs the other device out, including on iOS, and the confirmation names the device.

• If the support chat widget can’t load, Dabble now offers email instead.
